Chapter 1

A new world, June 2nd, 1777. The Colonies were in dismay, due to the Colonists growing struggle with the most powerful force on Earth, Great Britain. A war for the Colonies independence was at hand. Neither side was prepared to surrender, not this early. It was almost a year ago when The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776.

Colonists signed up for the militia, ready to fight for freedom and prosperity. Some remained loyal to Great Britain, willing to join their forces to win the war. Fathers, sons, nephews, uncles, cousins, and friends, all went off to support two separate ideals of a new world. One, was for the British to continue their rule of the colonies, and expand their influence further into the unknown. The other, was for a new nation to start new, allowing it to grow in any way the foundering fathers wanted it to.

In the countryside, just outside Philadelphia, lived a family who's loved one will become a part of the ever growing conflict. There, they refuged in a home close to the size of any house around the area. A chimney raised up from the  roof, blowing out smoke deep from within. Inside, a young anthropomorphic hedgehog ran around outside. He was slim, having little to no muscle mass in his body.

The hedgehog's fur was that of a medium shade of brown. The skin on his mouth and ears were a light shade of tan, shining in the sunlight. His quills were still in their early stage of development, growing out slightly from the back of his skull.  A pair of ears pointed from the top of the boy's head, a tail extending out slightly above his rear, along with Brown eyes. He was dressed in simple clothing, appearing to be of the lower class.

Above all else, what stood out the most was a birthmark on his face. It seemed to grow down from his cheek, in the shape of a tooth. The brown mark ended at a sharp point halfway down his face. Growing tired, he allowed himself to collapse, his spin impacting onto the grass. The hedgehog laid with his legs spread, folding his arms over and underneath his head. Resting his head back, the young one would gaze into the  tree. It's branches danced, waving a rhythm along with the wind.

The sun's light pierced through the leaves, shining down upon the young one's being. Feeling the intense warm and brightness, he raised his arm upward, shielding his eyes.

"Rhys!"

The boy rolled over hastily, a woman standing on the top of the hill. She was a hedgehog, quite slim and curvy,  coated with brown fur. Her hair was long, flowing with the wind. Brown eyes stared upon Rhys's, a soft smile carving from her lips. The female didn't move, wearing a fancy light blue dress. Gesturing for him to come, he did so without hesitation.

"Finally! I thought you wandered off again." She said, escorting the little one inside.

"Sorry mother! It's fun running around outside! So many things are out there, I know there is!"

Rhys walked impatiently, expressing his excitement as he hopped onto a chair. His mother made her way towards a plate, heading over to the table with it in her firm hand.

"The last thing I need is for you to get lost out there. You want to explore, don't you?" She set the dinnerware before him, looking at her child curiously.

"Yes! I want to travel the whole world!" Rhys stood up, caught up in the possibilities and dreams he wishes to set out for.

"Really? I had the same dream you did when I was your age. There were times where I did get to travel... just not the way I pictured it."

"Oh, did the people you meet smell bad?"

Another gentle smile overcame the woman's face, shaking her head side to side with ease. "The smell wasn't THAT awful. Smells was the least of my concern."

Getting more and more interested, the young hedgehog grew a bit more serious.

"What worried you mother?" Rhys urged, wanting the discussion to continue. He longed to know what his mother had experienced.

"A few things, but enough about me! Sit down like a gentleman and eat."

"But mom!"

"No buts. The only but I wanna hear or see is your butt in that chair, eating. Understood?"

Becoming irritated, Rhys knew trouble would soon ensue if he refused. The young hedgehog sat reluctantly, staring at his dangling feet.

"Yes mother..." He mumbled, seeing the dinner she had made.

His meal consisted of only corn and a loath of bread. A bit discouraged by the lack of food, Rhys remained on the chair, pondering within his thoughts. He wondered why the household was starting to become low on food and supplies. The hedgehog realized if his thoughts dwelled too long,  he might be scolded for wasting the time he had to feast. His mother stood in silence for a few moments, then exited the room. Once her presence left, Rhys began consuming the food, peacefully and in solitude.
Praise the lord! The start of Chapter 1 is here! I would really appreciate some feedback as this story progresses. Hope you enjoy!
